Orlando Criminal Law Firms

John Namey Firm Overview

If you are charged with a crime in Florida, there are several key piece of information you should know about criminal laws in Orlando and the rest of the state:

  • The 10-20-LIFE law.  Effectively a zero tolerance policy for anyone using a firearm during an alleged crime, this relatively new law requires mandatory prison sentences if you are convicted.  A ten year sentence can be imposed for pulling a gun during a crime.  For firing the gun, the sentence is increased to 25 years.  If the victim is injured or killed with the same weapon, a judge can authorize a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years to life.
  • The Cybercrimes Against Children Act.  Established in 2007, this Act allows for increased penalties for the possession or distribution of child pornography online.  It creates a separate penalty for those who communicate with a child online and then travel to meet him or her for illicit purposes.  Finally, penalties are also increased for those who misrepresent their age in order to seduce a child online.

Criminal laws in Orlando affect everyone

It is not only ordinary citizens who have trouble with state and local Orlando criminal law—the rich and famous can run into difficulties as well.  In 2008, Jacksonville Jaguars running back Fred Taylor was charged with disorderly conduct at a Miami Beach club and subsequently arrested.  In December of 2009, Tiger Woods nearly had criminal charges filed against him for crashing his car into a tree and fire hydrant outside his Florida home.  Because it was not proven that he was drunk driving, he was given only a reprimand for careless driving.

Choose an experienced Orlando criminal law firm

Orlando criminal law firms need to know not only federal, state, and local laws, but also the tactics used by your opponents at the office of the prosecutor.  Mr. Namey is a former Felony Division Chief for the 9th Judicial Circuit in Orange and Osceola Counties in Florida. He is intimately familiar with the techniques that the other side will use against your case should you break a criminal law in Orlando or the nearby area.
